Jan Gauthier looks to her northern California surroundings for inspiration for her landscape and still life photographs. Her work offers simple and calm compositions, often exploring the juxtaposition of science and nature. The subject of her photographs are almost always something recognizable from everyday life, the almost abstract way in which these elements are framed offers the viewer a different way of seeing.
Her process often combines elements of photography and painting, beginning with a traditional gelatin silver print. Warm tones are added to the black and white print by altering the image using a variety of bleaches and toners along with wax and oil-based pigments. Through this process, Gauthier captures more than a still life or landscape, but an atmospheric mood that is unique to her work.
