DAvid MICHAEL Slonim
Like Jazz, my work explores the tension between structure and spontaneity, form and freedom, harmony and discord, in pursuit of honest expression and, if possible, joy. Inspired by a wide variety of masters including Cezanne, Picasso, Diebenkorn, Mitchell, Motherwell, and Rothko, I develop motifs and rhythms through improvisation. Colors, shapes, lines, and textures talk to each other, argue with each other, and - if I’m doing my job well - end up getting along. It often takes months with a canvas to get to that point. I feel an affinity with abstract expressionists of the mid-20th century, sharing the belief that relationships of color, space, and texture can convey aspects of human experience in purely visual terms.
